Despite the forecast, we had quite a good turn out for the farmers market.

We have had nothing but positive comments about our group, the market and the park. Several folks expressed interest in having a garden plot for next summer, many signed up to join our group and also to volunteer for neighborhood clean ups. We have been surveying the attendees to ask what they would like to see at the Park going forward. We will have the results in the near future.

Speaking of clean ups, we are thrilled to have been approached by the President of Providence College’s Environmental Club to work with us on improving the neighborhood through clean ups and plantings. Incidentally this came up before ‘Operation Red Cup’ was publicized! These students as well as many others we have heard from are committed to keeping our neighborhood beautiful. Our first joint clean-up is scheduled for Sunday, October 24, started at 12pm. Details to follow next week.

In addition, before it gets too cold, we would like to plant some bulbs on the island at Eaton and Smith and resume painting the fence at Fargnoli Park. As always, we are looking for volunteers and would love to hear from you. We can be reached by email at contact@elmhurstcleanandgreen.org.

Have a great week!

Well we had a fantastic first day today at our Farmers Market at Davis Park! We had over 200 people and there was much excitement in the air. The vendors were all very pleased as well as surprised by the turn out. Next week we will have at least two more vendors joining us. Many people stopped by our EC&G table to express interest in joining our group which is terrific.

I would like to thank everyone who helped with the planning and execution of this market and for spreading the word…from graphics design to handing out fliers to making phone calls, doing research and running errands and also to those of you who came early this morning to help set up. A big thanks to Bethany Warburton and the Census Bureau for the great reusable grocery bags. They were a big hit.

Also, if you haven’t seen today’s ProJo, there is a very nice article and photo about our community garden and Davis Park in it. Great publicity for the park! Our name isn’t mentioned, but hopefully folks know that we were the driving force (along with Mr. McMahon of course) behind the Park’s revitalization.

After months of planning, June 27th “BUILD DAY” arrived and Mother Nature cooperated by blessing Providence with its first summery weather of the season. Under sunny skies and intense heat, a group of 340 volunteers came together and built a playground, picnic tables, benches, and a new fence at Davis Park. In addition there were children’s activities that produced some fantastic artwork to be displayed at the playground. The park became a construction site at 7:00AM, an anthill of activity as people shoveled yards of mulch for the playground base, mixed bags and bags of concrete for the post footings. Then up went the swings, a curly slide and all sorts of fun structures. By 2:30 in the afternoon, just six and a half hours later, the playground was completed. Guest of honor Mayor Cicilline performed the ribbon-cutting ceremony alongside City Councilmen Terry Hassett and Michael Solomon, State Representative Joanne Giannini, and Robert Henrikson, CEO of MetLife, who flew in from New York for the event. The ribbon itself was a fanciful paper chain created that morning by children under the watchful eyes of the Playground Youth Activities Committee.

The Davis Park Playground Project was a collaborative effort that combined the energies of members of Elmhurst Clean & Green, Smith Hill Community Development Corporation, Providence Parks Department, as well as many residents of the neighborhood. KaBOOM! (a nationally known builder of playgrounds) managed the project and MetLife Foundation provided financial support as well as more than one hundred employee-volunteers.

Do yourself a favor. Visit Davis Park and see the transformation taking place: the new Community Garden is already blooming with vegetables, and now the new playground sits alongside it. There are additional improvements planned for the park including a lighted walking path. Stay tuned.

Davis Park is located at the corner of Chalkstone and Oakland Avenues, across from the Nathanael Greene Middle School.

We’ll be posting pictures of some of the changes in the next couple days.

On Monday June 8th, two gardeners volunteered to meet the compost delivery truck around 1pm and were surprised to find the water pipe installers busy at work with dirt compiled up at the location for the compost pile. Fortunately, the compost delivery truck was about 15 minutes late, and the pipe installers, once they knew about the compost delivery, worked a miracle in cleaning up the location for the compost delivery. So by 2pm the compost truck left with the compost pile at the preplanned location.

Later that same evening, a few gardeners came to prepare their beds and put in some plants. There were other onlookers, children and a city councilman who enjoyed the evening at the garden.

On May 30, 2009, the Davis Park Community Garden was launched with first member workday. 21 garden beds were built, (16) 4’ x 10’, (2) 10 x 10 and (3) 4’ x 4’. All but one small bed have caretakers who have agreed to abide by the rules of the garden, signed a contract and paid their $25 membership fee. Some have even started planting.

The day was marked with much enthusiasm with a special thanks to Robert Rude for donating his tools and talents in getting the last of the beds completed. Thirty volunteers of all ages showed up to assist in the creation, placement and soil preparation of the beds. There is still space for additional beds so a list is being created and when the final design is complete, we will finish the last of the space.

A BIG THANK-YOU TO ALL THE VOLUNTEERS.
