FAMILY FUN DAY & FARMERS’ MARKET !!!

Our 1st Family Fun Day in conjuction with our Farmers’ Market will be held this Sunday, August 1 from 11am-2pm at Davis Park. The YMCA will be there with their ‘Y on the Move’, a 35′ inflatable obstacle course. There is a new playground and basketball court for the kids and we will also have face painting.

While at the Park, shop for your fresh, local produce, herbs, flowers and plants!

The Farmers’ Market will be running every Sunday from 11-2pm through Halloween and we will have a Family Fun Day once a month with activities for the kids. Come out and support our local farmers!

EARTH DAY EVENT SAT. 4/24

Next Saturday, April 24 we are holding our annual Earth Day event in conjunction with PC’s Service Day. We are very pleased that along with PC students we will be joined by a group of JWU students. All volunteers are welcome – come for as long as you can – even an hour will help!

9:00 am - Meet at Davis Park. Coffee and snack provided.
9:15 am – Register, get assignment and t-shirt (first 125 volunteers).
10: 00 am – With ‘group leaders’, depart to project location
12:00 noon – Finish up. Lunch will be provided at Davis Park.

Our projects include painting the concession stand, bleachers and benches, and cleaning up Davis Park and cleaning certain areas of Elmhurst and Smith Hill. Unfortunately we cannot complete the tasks that we had scheduled for Fargnoli Park as it is opening day for baseball, but hope to do so in the near future.

FARMERS’ MARKET

We are very excited to announce that we are holding our 2nd annual Farmers’ Market at Davis Park beginning Sunday July 11 through Sunday October 31. Our times have changed….we will be beginning at 11:00am and running until 2:00pm. Several of the vendors will be returning including Schartner Farm, Mazie’s Organic Catering and Fruit Hill Apiaries to name a few, plus many new vendors.

New this year will be Family Fun Days, held once a month during the markets, the first scheduled for July 11. FFD’s will include music, kid’s activities and lots of surprises.

If you are interested in volunteering or being a vendor, please ‘contact us’.

CELEBRATE EARTH DAY WITH US!

We are holding our annual Earth Day celebration event on Saturday, April 24th from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm. Everyone is welcome! Any time that you can commit would be great…even an hour would help. Joining us once again will be the fantastic students from Providence College!

We’ll be cleaning up sections of some of the major streets such as Smith, Oakland, Chalkstone and Convent, priming the concession stand at Davis Park and planting some shrubs, trees and flowers.

If you can’t make it this time, please consider going out on your own at some point to pick up some trash or whatever else you can do to improve our parks and neighborhood!

Next Meeting Tuesday March 9th

Get involved in your neighborhood! Please join us to discuss various neighborhood improvement projects, such as the Davis Park farmers’ market, the Davis Park community garden, Davis Park and Fargnoli Park renovations, new grants, the EC&G website, neighborhood clean ups and beautification projects, merchant’s association, Earth Day projects and other new business. We’ve had great success because of the volunteer efforts of those in our neighborhood. We welcome all community members.

Date: Tuesday 3/9/10

Time: 7:00-8:30 p.m.

Location: Providence College (Room 405 of the Feinstein Building)

Agenda: We are trying a new format this month. We will begin with brief introductions and then we will break into subgroups to work on the various projects. (You pick the project you are most interested in, or pick more than one.) We will then meet as a group to give updates on our projects and discuss new business.

We hope you will join us. If you haven’t attended a meeting before, we look forward to meeting you.

Updates on Ward 12 from Councilman Hassett

STUDENT DROP OFF LANE has been completed on Oakland Ave. and is operational for the benefit of student safety – this lane was created to improve traffic safety for students being dropped off for school.

DAVIS PARK – new crosswalks are to be installed between Davis Park and Greene Middle School across Chalkstone (funded by the 12th Ward Public Improvement Fund – CDBG and Bonds).

FATHER LENNON PARK – new walking track was installed several years ago and will now include new solar lighting along the path (funded by the 12th Ward Public Improvement Fund – CDBG and Bonds).

NATHANAEL GREENE - parking lot has been resurfaced; new trees have been planted; a landscaping plan is being developed to substantially improve the campus grounds (implementation Spring 2010).

CANDACE STREET PARK – a steering committee is currently developing a report with suggestions on park improvements and a plan is expected prior to construction in Spring 2010; (funded by the 12th Ward Public Improvement Fund – CDBG and Bonds)

JOHN O’BRIEN PARK (Regent Avenue) improvement plan being amended and will be ready for SPRING 2010

EC&G Updates

Hi everyone! Quite a few updates to report on…

Bob McMahon/Parks Dept. have started construction of the new walking path and ballfield at Davis Park. Coming soon, solar lighting and black iron fence along Chalkstone.

Christine, President of PC’s student environmental group recruited about 15 students who finished painting the front fence at Fargnoli Park. Looks great and thanks so much to the student volunteers!

A few of us met with Amintha Cinotti from the Providence Planning & Development department and will soon have information to pass along to Elmhurst businesses regarding the benefits of establishing a merchant’s association.

A beautiful new ‘Elmhurst’ sign for the Eaton/Smith island has been designed and will be made by our member, Larry Pavese. It will be installed early next spring. Anna and I planted some tulips and daffodils around the monument so it should look nice! More landscaping in the spring as well.

Several people questioned why trees were cut down on the Parkway. We have found out that they were diseased. Heidi is working on applications for obtaining free trees from the City. We will be looking for volunteers in the spring to help plant them.

Speaking of free trees, Dec. 1 is the deadline to submit applications for free trees for neighborhood streets. All that is needed is 5 neighbors per street to agree to have trees planted in front of their homes and to help plant and water them. If you are interested, you still have time! Please visit the Providence Neighborhood Planting Program’s web site for more info at www.pnpp.org. Folks, these are beautiful, tall, mature trees of many different varieties…not little saplings!

We will soon start planning next season’s farmers’ market. It will be much bigger and even better than our first. If you’d like to be on the sub- committee, please let us know at contact@elmhurstcleanandgreen.org.

We would like to see some holiday/winter decorations on Smith St. If you have any ideas or contributions or can volunteer, please also let us know at our contact address.
